Mersey Mavericks Purple 54 – 51 U18 Blue
A closely run game for the U18 Blues squad who made the trip to St Hilda’s for a match up against Mersey Mavericks Purple.
The game started with the Phoenix team putting a lot of early pressure on the ball. This resulted in some good early turn overs leading to quick breakaway baskets.
At the end of the first quarter the Phoenix team were ahead 14-10.
Despite lots of pressing and turnovers, the visitors failed to make every steal count and lost the next quarter 14-6.
The Mavs team went into the changing rooms 4 points up 24-20
A high tempo to the third quarter saw an even share of baskets – the Phoenix team really struggled to find finishes to tick the scoreboard over. At the end of the third it was 44-37 so work needed from the lads.
Some changes for the last quarter and a full court press saw successful turnovers and a run of easy buckets. Despite a late rally the home team ran out winners by 3 – 54 to 51. A high energy game with lots of bench rotation to keep the pressure high. Lots of positives to take and elements to work on for the next game.
MVP to Ben who put in a superb effort and hustled hard – picking up 8 points personal and working hard in the close of the game.
